Who Do YOU Wear Makeup For?

Submitted by Sara on October 22, 2009 – 9:59 pm24 Comments

This week I have had a few days off of work while my husband is out of town. So I have had a small taste of the “stay at home mother” lifestyle.. Small taste:) But I am still enjoying it! So the past couple days while I am waiting in line to pick up Marissa from school, I am looking around the school yard and seeing the parents around me… One of the first things I notice is that almost none of the other mothers are wearing makeup… I must have looked like some kinda __________ (fill in the blank, lol) next to all of these ladies!

I felt kinda odd just standing there looking like “my everyday self” in this crowd. I put on makeup as part of my everyday routine. Its never even a question for me… Even If I don’t have any intention of leaving the house. I want to be ready. In the case that I have to run out… or perhaps if a friend might stop by to chat… or even just to look nice for my husband.

So this brings about the question.. Who do you wear makeup for? Is it for those you may run into at the grocery store? A group of friends you may be planning to spend the evening with.. Your co-workers… ???

OR…Is all the effort you spend daily to apply your makeup for yourself alone?….  Who determines how much makeup you wear on a normal day?

I work makeup for myself. I like putting it on, I like perfecting my technique. If I'm out on a rush I might not wear any or just put on a quick look.

If I'm going out…I WANNA BE GLAM!!!

hello, actually I don't wear complete makeup. I love to look naturally beauty (or maybe I should say that I'm not confident enough to wear complete makeup). I use bb cream, lip gloss, and eyebrow. That's all. But that's makeup for me^-^
I always set myself with those stuff everytime I go out. So, I wear makeup for myself. Is it an answer for you? :p

I don't have kids (yet), but when I do I think I will be in the same boat as you when I look around and compare myself to other mothers.
I definitely wear makeup for myself, to have more confidence when I go somewhere, or even when I'm staying home.

  • I mostly wear makeup to make myself feel a bit more confident. I will wear it to look nice for my husband if we're going out or something. I'll wear it to look more put together if I'm going to certain places. I guess it just depends on the mood and occasion who it's really for that day.:)

I wear makeup for me. i HATE the feeling of going out with out makeup on. even if i just throw on a little concealer and powder foundation and some mascara ill be happy enough. i feel better about myself if i have makeup on and if i am out and see someone all done up and looking good, while i well..dont, i get mad at myself lol idk its weird haha

  • I wear makeup for myself. It gives me a chance to practice blending and to come up with different color combos. It also helps when I do apply my makeup if I happen to go somewhere I'm already ready.

  • @Rai- girl you are always glam!

@Mappie- I know what you mean.. certain places I am going I may not feel comfortable wearing certain colors. I wear makeup for myself too. But I also wear for others I guess too. Casue Its a part of who I am and my personality ya know…

@Lynn- Yes. I mentioned this a couple posts back, but without makeup I dont have the same confidence…

@Madeline- Exactly confidence in how others see us…

@Nicole- I know what you mean exactly!

@Blkprincess- I think that way too. I have fun applying so its fun practice! And of course being ready for whatever!!

And yes, I do know how you feel about looking like a high-maintenance mommy. It's a fashion show for me, everyday a different outfit and often a different lipstick colour, when other moms seem to wear a mom uniform. Sometimes I feel like __________, too.

I have become dependent on makeup. Maybe its a bad thing or good, either way I can't leave the house without it! My brows are very sparse and I have some acne pigmentations that I dare not leave looking like that! it depends where I'm going to when I decide what I wear, colours etc… mostly I love fun looks so if I'm going out shopping I like bright colours unless I'm lazy or tired lol
I also have major circles under my eyes so its hard for me to go out without concealer even if its just to the corner store! you never know who you will run into!

My make up is many things to me. Funnily enough a friend (whom I have just recently got back in touch with) was saying, as a bit of a criticism, of a mutual friend "She even puts make up to sit in the house". To which I replied "So do I".

MU, for me, is like brushing my teeth. It's part of my routine to wake up and make myself ready for the day ahead. I wouldn't go out the house without brushing my hair and having a bit of my 'face' on. I have dark shadows under my eyes which I like to cover up too. It's just like wearing clothes that fit and suit you. Everyone just wants to look their best.

It's also a creative outlet. I'm a painter so this is just painting but on my face.

  • Oh my, I thought I was the only woman on earth that noticed this. I have a 15 year old son that gets to be totally embarrassed because apparently he has a "hot" mom because she wears makeup and has "hot" hair…lol. Oh, the 15 year old kids. The fact is that the other mothers I see are wearing no makeup and I feel embarrassed when speaking with another mother about our kids getting together. I don't want her to think I am trampy because I am wearing a full face of makeup even though the makeup isn't trampy. I don't want to change though. I enjoy having to wear makeup to the mailbox, to work each day, the grocery store, my Mom's for a cup of coffee, etc. The fact is that I enjoy doing it and love how I feel after putting it on. Great post!

i completely understand how you feel, thought i am not a mother wearing makeup around nonmakeupy mothers. (that's not even english, sorry!)

it a funny feeling to look better than everyone else, one day i put on a full face and high leather boots over skinnies to go to WALMART for goodness sake! you should have seen the looks i got, and i did feel a little uncomfortable, and you wonder what theyr'e thinking – i'm really not trying to be better than you! i really am still cute under all this!

either way, i think the amount of makeup should be appropriate for the situation… no green smokey eyes for work! that is only for clubbing! and try not to do the "natural" contour look for drinks at the bar, save that for the daytime at work…

situation determines how i do my makeup. xoxo

@Madame Fatale- I agree. I enjoy the time with myself. that daily pampering!

    @ Lipstick Rules- Thank you!

    @Mama Jen-Exactly! Agreed!

@Macface- That is so cute! lol. I love it! Being the hot mom is definitely something to be proud of! Thank you!

@Lizzard- I love every comment! You are so funny! I agree. You have to apply based on the situation… But in my situation. Any was too much. lololol!

@Lipglossiping- Exactly. I love feeling more polished. I try to let my husband not see me to often that way either. lol

I enjoy wearing makeup. I wear it for myself and my husband, but mainly for myself. I believe makeup enhances a woman's features and in my opinion only a hand few of women can get away the "natural" no makeup look. Just like a woman looks finished and polished when she has her hair and makeup done and dresses a ccordingly (doesn't have to be expensive just clean and neat) I believe others appreciate it too. I know i have seen some lulu's out there and how they think they look good amazes me.
